SATDAS programme will improve water management in agriculture arid and semi-arid areas to achieve sustainable agricultural development as well as on eliminating hunger in these areas. Irrigated agriculture represents 20% of the total cultivated land, but accounts for 40% of the total food produced worldwide. Institutions mostly lack the consenting environment and capacities to carry out their functions effectively and institutions mandated with developing irrigation regularly bound themselves to larger scale schemes, capital intensive, and have a tendency to be dependent on public sector methodologies rather than develop prospects for private approaches and management.
SATDAS will improve on proficiency of water use in agriculture in arid and semi-arid areas that will also be contingent on matching off-farm developments with technology transfer and incentives for on-farm reserves in developed improved seeds and soil and water management in arid and semi-arid areas. Possibilities such as improved seeds, low-till, sustainable agricultural intensification, alternate wetting and others that exist, but they all require corresponding enhancements in water delivery systems to deliver an on-demand provision, through information technology like soil moisture sensors and satellite evapotranspiration measurement to develop productivity and efficiency of water in agriculture in arid and semi-arid areas. Use of agricultural safely and effectively will affect positively crop yield and production.
SATDAS water for Agriculture in Arid and Semi-arid areas aims to conserve water and energy, and guarantee sustainable resource arid regions. These will in turn help to reduce inputs and labour, mitigate environmental (weather) related risks, and support off-season production prospects in these regions. Through bringing stakeholders together in 'Irrigation Development Platforms' the programme intents to facilitate SATDAS water innovation across selected arid and semi-arid counties in Kenya.
